New Men’s Hat

20180113-Snow-Hat1

I wanted to make a new hat for Mike and based this one on a hat I made for myself last year, but it’s a little different.

20180113-Croceht-Hat2

Pattern
Yarn: Basic acrylic in black and dark green
Hook: J

Start: Leave a long tail (~6″) at beginning, and chain 30, connect in ring, make sure it’s not twisted
Round 1: 1 hdc in each chain around, join at end (30)
Round 2: ch 2, {(2 hdc), [(1 hdc) 4xs]} around, join at end (36)
Round 3: ch 2, {(2 hdc), [(1 hdc) 5xs]} around, join at end (42)
Round 4: ch 2, {(2 hdc), [(1 hdc) 6xs]} around, join at end (48)
Round 5: ch 2, {(2 hdc), [(1 hdc) 7xs]} around, join at end (54)
Round 6: ch 2, {(2 hdc), [(1 hdc) 8xs]} around, join at end (60)
Round 7: ch 2, 1 hdc in each st around, join at end (60)

Note 1: Back at the top, use a yarn needle to use the tail of yarn there to weave through the starting chain and pull it tight and hide the rest of the yarn tail. I work this from the inside/wrong-side of the hat and just keep working into the first row until all is hidden. You’ll want to do this in order to try the hat on and test the length as you get up over round 20 or so.

Round 8-23: repeat round 7 (60)

Note 2: Your goal here is get it long enough that it folds up. I wanted it to be long enough that you can pull it down to cover the whole ear and still be folded up nicely so that you have a double layer over your ears, or you can fold more of it up to expose the ear if you want to. It reminds me of a fisherman’s cap in this way.

Note 3: Do not join the end of the last round to it’s beginning because you will be switching colors.

Next: Cut the black yarn (Main body color) with enough of a tail to hide. Use the green yarn (Edge color) to join the end of the round to it’s beginning, chain 1 and turn. Since this will be on the folded up edge you will be seeing the right side of the stitches by working in the opposite direction of the rest.

Round 24-25: ch 1, 1 sc in each stitch around, join at end (60)

End: Cut Green yarn and hide, and if you didn’t already hide the end of the black yarn, do that now.
