Welcome! This is my crochet site. It's mostly for my own reference, but if others find it interesting and useful that's good too. ~Snow

Large Messenger Bag with Pockets

I don’t know why I got the itch to design a messenger bag, other than maybe seeing lots of bags in books and online and none of them suited me. They were all a little off somehow.

Yarn: Black Chenille – Thick & Quick, and Claret, Wool-ease – Thick & Quick. (Both Lion Brand)

Hook: N/10mm

Start with Claret: Ch 30

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in ea ch to end. (29 sc). (Be sure to work into the back side of ea ch, so that you leave a nice edge. This makes both ends look nearly the same without actually stitching an edge back on here after the fact.)

Row 2: : ch 1, turn, sc in ea st to end. (29 sc)

Note: You will be repeating row 2 for this entire piece. You are more or less creating a simple piece of fabric. The important thing is the striping pattern. So I am now going to simply tell you how many rows in each color.

8 rows in Black Chenille (ie Rows 3 – 10)
2 rows in Claret (Rows 11 – 12)
6 rows in Black (Rows 13 – 18)
4 rows in Claret (Rows 19 – 22)
4 rows in Black (Rows 23 – 26)
6 rows in Claret (Rows 27 – 32)
2 rows in Black (Rows 33 – 34)
8 rows in Claret (Rows 35 – 42)
2 rows in Black (Rows 43 – 44)
6 rows in Claret (Rows 45 – 50)
4 rows in Black (Rows 51 – 54)
4 rows in Claret (Rows 55 – 58)
6 rows in Black (Rows 59 – 64)
2 rows in Claret (Rows 65 – 66)
8 rows in Black (Rows 67 – 74)
2 rows in Claret (Rows 75 – 76)

Note: This piece is for the main body of the bag. It should measure about 16″ wide x 36″ long. Length is for 10″ = front panel, 6″ = bottom, 10″ = back, and 10″ = flap. (In the picture to the right, the 2 green st markers are showing you the rows that are the bottom 6″ of the bag.)

Pocket (Make 2):

Start with Claret: Ch 11
2 Rows (1 & 2) Claret, 10 sc
6 rows (3 – 8) Black, 10 sc
2 rows (9 – 10) Claret, 10 sc
2 rows (9 – 10) Black, 10 sc

Measures: 5.5″ wide x 6″ high

Note: You line these up with the stripes on the front panels and sew them on.

Sides & Strap Piece:

Start with Black: ch 81
2 rows (1 – 2) Black, 80 sc
6 rows (3 – 8) Claret, 80 sc
4 rows (9 – 12) Black, 80 sc

Note: You connect this with the ends against the bottom. Again, line up the stripes. Front 10″ with pockets and back 10″ get sewn up the sides of the side/strap panel.
